The Rooney Group of companies is a leading New Zealand multi-disciplinary company with branches in civil contracting, civil consulting, fibre cable laying, cartage and transportation, farming, irrigation scheme development, pond lining solutions and tourism operations.
It all started with one man and his machine in 1976 but now there is almost 250 staff in five offices throughout Canterbury along with various farms and high country stations. The Group has one of the most extensive civil contracting plant lists in New Zealand and combined with a skilled and experienced team of managers, engineers and operators we consistently complete projects on time and within budget. The Rooney group also operates under Internationally Certified systems for Quality, Safety and Environmental management as well as ACC WSMP Tertiary level.
Rooney Earthmoving Ltd
We are a leading New Zealand civil contractor, specialising in earthmoving, irrigation, pipe and cable laying, cartage and transportation. Approximately 200 staff are employed in various companies and branches in Waimate, Ashburton, Christchurch, Timaru and Oamaru. Our skilled and experienced team of managers, engineers and operators, along with an extensive equipment list and internationally certified systems for quality, safety and environmental management ensure we consistently complete projects on time and within budget.
NZTA
- We tender for and complete all size NZTA roading projects in the region and have completed two of the largest roading projects in the South Island in recent years.
Regional Farm Support
- A team of experienced staff and specialised equipment are employed to provide a total on farm service to farmers in the Canterbury region. From dairy conversions, ponds, irrigation upgrades through to routine race maintenance and stock feed cartage, the Rooney operation continues to support a large client base of Canterbury farmers.
Local Council and ECan
- We provide essential services for councils including river protection work, flood damage repairs and stockwater intake clearance and repair.
Irrigation Rooney Earthmoving Ltd.
- The limited company has developed a unique ability with a turn key solution to irrigation scheme construction. From the complex process of achieving a Resource Consent through to the delivery of water to the shareholders, Rooney Earthmoving can provide a true and tested model for its clients. The experience that has been gained from constructing a large number of Canterbury irrigation schemes has been utilised and forms a template for the development of many new schemes currently in the pipeline.
Special Projects
- Large scale projects requiring extensive heavy plant and manpower resources over long periods of up to 3 years. Some of our large scale irrigation projects fall into this catergory as can large mining contracts or canals. As an example our Rangitata South Irrigation project required 22 scrapers, 6 excavators up to 85t, 5 65t dump trucks and 4 bulldozers up to 75t as well as many other plant items, all sourced entirely from within REL.
Rooney Consulting
“Concept to Construction”
Rooney Consulting has developed a unique turn-key solution to irrigation scheme construction. From the complex process of achieving a Resource Consent through to the delivery of water to the shareholders, we can provide a true and tested model for its clients. The experience that has been gained from constructing a large number of Canterbury irrigation schemes has been utilized and forms a template for the development of many new schemes currently in the pipeline. Rooney Consulting provides scoping, investigation, design, and costing, dams and ponds for any irrigation or water delivery schemes including smaller on farm projects that require structural design and hydraulic modelling.
EcoTech
EcoTech is a new factory producing Needle punched geotextile from recycled PET containers, providing a natural solution to the Geomembrane and filter fabric demands of the civil construction industry. The plant manufacturers a range of geotextile fabrics and Geomembranes from recycled waste materials, for use in sustainable construction projects.

Rooney Contracts is based in Timaru but tenders and undertakes contracts across the region. Our engineering, estimating and survey staff use their varied experience and skills to support a client base that includes Local and Regional Authorities, Energy Companies, Commercial Developers and Utility Companies.
Rooney Farms
Gary Rooney and his late wife Adrienne evolved great passion for New Zealand's South Island, expressed as their love for farming and land conservation. Rooney Farms own and operate a number of unique Canterbury plains and high country properties throughout the South Island. Ownership includes the protection of large areas of some of New Zealand's most picturesque blocks to allow regeneration of natural fauna. The farming operation employs a team of over 25 staff and specialises in all types of farming including dairy, beef, sheep and deer.
Irrigation

Rooney Boring Ltd was developed to support the New Zealand fibre rollout in addition to an extensive group of new and established utility infrastructure providers. Our staff provide Directional drilling, Grundomat, Pipe Ram, Fibre fleeting, hauling and location services throughout the South Island
