State Highway One Realignment

Completed for Transit New Zealand, this $5.6 million project involved the realignment of a section State Highway One in Normanby, South Canterbury to improve its safety.

Overview

The project involved the construction of 2.6km of new highway and 800m shape correction at each point the new and existing highways converged. 1km of main trunk fibre optic cable was also laid for Telecom and TestraClear. The project was Transit New Zealand's largest South Island project for 2005 and as the primary contractor Rooney Group completed virtually all of it in-house.

Health + Safety Management

Due to the large size of the project, a comprehensive health and safety management plan was implemented. As part of this plan, OSH was invited to inspect the project site. This inspection resulted in a Grade 2 rating and some excellent comments.

Environmental Management

An extensive environmental management plan resulted in a range of measures being put in place. 14 sediment control ponds captured all surface water from the site and diverted it to the natural watercourse in a controlled manner. Formation exposure was minimised through top soiling and prompt metaling of the highway. Fuel supplies were also monitored closely, particularly around waterways, with spill control methods on hand at all times.

In addition to these measures, Rooney Group kept close contact with Environment Canterbury as they monitored gravel extraction and sediment control.
